For the past three years, the government has stepped up the process of registering the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number to prevent illegal entry of mobiles
Spokesperson of Nepal Telecommunication Authority Santosh Poudel informed that the illegally imported mobiles will be controlled after MDMS comes into operation.
NEA spokesperson Poudel said that low-quality mobiles have also been introduced and customers could not be informed about it.
Spokesperson Poudel said that this arrangement has been made only for the purpose of controlling the mobile sets entering Nepal by cheating the revenue.
“Traders are selling mobile sets illegally, but they are not allowed to do so after the implementation of this system. Mandatory registration is required or the mobiles do not work,” he said.
He said that the mobiles brought from abroad and operating till now will not be shut down.
“There are many fears that the mobiles that are being used now will also be switched off, but those mobiles are working,” he said.
